Caley Marine and the Seanamic Group are specialists in marine engineering. They also design and build ships – and submarines. This is a mini-submarine, a DSAR 650, which was build for export to the Indian Navy, is a submarine rescue system and was built right here in Glasgow and in Paisley. The submarine comes with its own berthing and launching platform, with a series of integral decompression chambers and can operate anywhere in the world. Besides being able to go down to great depths, the submarine can be used for research or rescue, and with the decompression chambers in the berthing platform, this means that crews can either remain at depths for long periods or be brought back to safety after working at great depths. I was amazed at the level of beautiful and sophisticated engineering, and even more amazed, that after the completion ceremony, the whole thing was going to be broken down so that it can be shipped to India. That in itself must be a feat in itself.
